5 Reasons You Should Definitely Not Try Fasting

It seems everyone in your social media feed is talking about the amazing benefits of fasting. But you know better. Did we really develop as a species by not eating? Why would anyone skip a meal when there is no proof that it actually works?

Here are just five reasons why you should definitely not try fasting.

1. You’ll lose weight.

Fasting has proven to increase your metabolic rate, which helps you burn off more calories per day. You worked hard for that winter belly. Why not keep it? Even worse – a well-planned fast will shed excess weight while preserving muscle tissue, so you won't even have an excuse for sitting around feeling weak all day.

2. Your heart will be too healthy.

Your body responds to fasting by reducing levels of bad cholesterol and triglycerides in your blood. In fact, some studies associate fasting with a lower risk of coronary artery disease, and who wants that? There's no way to know if the grinch was fasting when his heart grew three sizes, but it sure seems possible. Don't risk it. Eat your normal meals and keep your heart the way it is.

3. Your brain will function too well.

Have you ever felt like your brain was a little sluggish? Well, several studies have shown that fasting can have a tremendous impact on brain health.

Intermittent fasting over the course of several months could even help prevent neurodegenerative disorders.

4. Your body will be less inflamed.

Who doesn’t love a little chronic inflammation? I mean, sure, inflammation seems to contribute to the development of chronic conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, heart disease, and even cancer, and studies have shown that fasting can help decrease levels of inflammation and improve overall health.

But three square meals a day just makes more sense.

5. You’ll live longer and look younger.

Did you know that fasting could be the key to youth and longevity? Those healthy influencers who fast can't stop talking about benefits like increased cellular repair and delay of tissue aging, and they do look healthy. But it's probably just photoshop.

Animal studies with fasting prove to be very promising, demonstrating that fasting results in longer life and increased survival rates. But you're not an animal, you're an evolved human being, right? And what has two opposable thumbs and wants to die with a full belly, thank you very much?
