As the rut is starting to wind down and morning temps are falling below the freezing point, it’s a critical time for bucks to put weight back on. Their body mass can be as much as 25% lower than when they entered the rut. They also need to replenish vital macro and micro mineral reserves in their skeletal system. We can’t stress it enough to make sure you leave Trophy Rock out for your deer as they prepare for winter. We believe that post rut nutrition has as much to do with next year’s antler development as any of the other growth periods. You might even consider creating a few winter mineral sites locating them where deer hunker down to conserve energy. We suggest elevating Trophy Rock above snow levels on a stump or makeshift stand. Choose sites near winter food sources or bedding areas on the downwind side of wooded hills or on south facing slopes where solar warming occurs.
